Letter to 2005 GLBT Pride/Twin Cities Festival Attendees

Dear Friends,

I believe politics is about improving people’s lives, that’s why I am running for Minneapolis City Council Ward 10. My proven leadership experience in non-profit management, and in social change through the arts, provides me with the skills to advocate for you, fighting for social and economic justice as your City Council Member.

You can count on me to fight for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community. I have always stood with you, not only in words, but also in actions.

In the 80s…

  • Working with Olympia Dukakis in Thunder in the Light, exploring issues of AIDS/HIV and homophobia, educating in high schools and colleges, drug rehabs and prisons.
  • Becoming a certified AIDS/HIV educator in New York City, performing with Irondale Ensemble AIDS Project in plays about AIDS/HIV education in all of the boroughs.
  • Collaborating with ACT-UP as an AIDS/HIV educator on various community relations and education projects.

In the 90s…

  • Founding Pillsbury House Theatre, whose mission was to provide a platform for marginalized people to have their muted voices heard. Specifically including: gays and lesbians, people of color, women, the disabled, and the economically disenfranchised. Producing and directing many plays with GLBT themes, and extensively exploring concepts of homoeroticism. Select plays: Burn This, Streamers, Slow Dance on the Killing Ground, The Brunette Breck Girl, Les Mannequins, The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, and more.
  • Emceeing numerous events for the Brian Coyle Caucus.
  • Founding Breaking Ice, an education/outreach company to explore issues of homophobia, racism, sexism and violence issues.

In the 00s…

  • Helping to develop and co-directing a play, Order My Steps, with Paris Barclay and writer Tracey Scott Wilson, at Cornerstone Theater in Los Angeles, dealing with homophobia, bigotry and AIDS in the African-American faith based community.

I’m asking for your help and support in fighting for: Smart Development; Affordable Housing; Safe Neighborhoods; Quick & Efficient Transportation; Responsible Fiscal Policy; High-Quality Public Education; Civil Rights, Human Rights, and Democracy; Arts and Culture.

I will put the innovation and drive I've shown in my personal and professional life to work for you every day as your City Council Member. Together, we can ensure that your voice is in the room when important decisions are being made.

Peace,

Ralph Remington
